Yurei :: 幽霊

2023-04-23

Yurei - my first PC - is finally complete, 6 months later!

TypePartPaid / GBPNotes
Motherboard ASRock B550m-itx/ac 140 This one took a while to get ahold of for some reason
CPU AMD Ryzen 5600G 100 Probably the easiest to acquire part of the whole build
GPU AMD Radeon Pro wx5100
AMD Radeon Pro v320
110
160
I love this card; single-slot, efficient, YInMn blue. Unfortunately it's just not powerful enough for me :(
I'll be continuing to look for a wx9100 or a v320 at a reasonable price.

2023-04-29 update: purchased a v320 on Yahoo! Auctions for about 20000 JPY! The JPY is low right now so it was a pretty good price. Now waiting for shipping~

2023-05-05 update: well, ordering something from Japan during Golden Week was bound to be slow I suppose :/
Further details below

PSU Silverstone sst-sx600-g
EVGA 650GM
Corsair sf750
60
120
For some reason the PSU has been the most painful part of the whole build. The joy of small form-factor I suppose... Plan to upgrade to a Corsair sf750 at some point (probably sometime when I'm at uni)

2023-05-12 update: replaced with an EVGA 650GM so that I no longer have to fear my PC exploding or something I guess?

2023-05-23 update: replaced with a Corsair sf750 because the 650GM was making some strange crackling sounds. Also the sf750 has these nice clean cables so that's a plus :)

RAM Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 0 Got this for free from my brother :)
Cooler Noctua NH-L12 Ghost S1 Edition 35 Works perfectly. Got this from eBay - I had completely forgotten about the auction and missed it, but the seller was kind enough to offer it to me anyway (all thanks to my boundless charisma and charm) and cancelled the winner's bid :p
Case Louqe Ghost S1 190 It should only have cost 140 really, but then taxes and customs... Anyway, love this case. Somehow the C13/C14 cable was faulty and tripped my breaker, so I'm waiting for a replacement now.

2023-04-29 update: so I cancelled my previous order for a C13/C14 from a store I found, and then they sent me the cable anyway so I got a free cable, alongside the replacement from Louqe that's due to arrive at some point ha

Total price: £745

Details about the V320:
The PCB appears to be the same as this engineering sample for the Radeon Pro wx 8200. If it's anything alike, hopefully it comes with graphite paste for the die! Well, that's probably being a little too hopeful though. If temps are bad I may investigate and possibly use a graphite pad if regular paste is used.

According to my research, the card was custom made for Google Stadia development nodes ( ref.) and are mostly only available from Japan. They seem to have been made with either 8 or 16 GB of HBM2 vram (or maybe even 12 according to some listings), but considering it was made with the same PCB as the wx8200 it will probably be 8GB. This one is the 8GB model, and uses Hynix vram (unfortunately). I believe the models using a 6+8 pin connector are the 8GBs, whereas those using a 8+8 pin connector (though I am starting to doubt their existence) use 16GB.

Well, I received the card. At first my PC would refuse to POST with it in - couldn't get to BIOS settings, no keyboard leds etc.
I fiddled around in the UEFI firmware settings a bit, and by some magic it began to work. In case I need this for future reference, my changes were:

Now most of those I expect were probably not what was causing the issue, but, well, if it works it works!

So onto the actual GPU features, it's almost silent on idle, drawing very little power and staying below 30°C.

Software (OS) Details

Currently running GNU Guix System. I love Lisp, and especially the grace and elegance of Scheme, and so an OS where the entire system configuration is defined entirely in Scheme was not something that I could not use and love, of course. Well, it has its quirks, but it's overall really nice to use; occasionally I run into an error with installing a package, but those times are rare and typically resolved in fair time.

I created a Guix channel to hold my custom packages and services here. Currently it has the script I use to set my GPU undervolt values and control its fan speed, and a service to start the script on system startup.
